This weekend,  I was sailing on the TP52 ‘John Merricks II’, and had organised Chris Mason to come for a day of coaching the young sailors. Chris has done several America’s Cup campaigns and currently sails on the TP52 ‘Cristabella’ on the MedCup cirecuit. He had a wealth of knowledge to pass on regarding rig setup, a hugely complex area which is even more important as the IRC rule has been updated this season to allow changes in forestay length whilst racing.

On Sunday, we spent some time looking at our offshore sail inventory, before spending a valuable couple of hours practising starts with ‘Chernikeeff 2′ in preparation for the first race of the season next weekend.

This coming weekend looks like it is my last weekend off before the sailing season kicks off in earnest. I’m intending to use it to generally sort my life out and catch up with my family, as it will probably be the last time for a while! After this weekend, my plans are:

28-29th March: training on TP52 ‘John Merricks II’ with Keelboat Programme sailors

4-5th April: Warsash SC Big Boat 1 weekend

10-12th April: RORC Red Funnel Easter Challenge

18-19th April: Mermaid Match Racing Championships with David Newey

25-26th April: RYA National Match Racing series qualifier 1

A busy few weeks!

This weekend I was sailing with David Newey, as a sparring partner for some of the British women hoping to compete in match racing at London 2012. Having not sailed together since September, we had a slow start to the round robin, before winning 8 matches in a row to finish 2nd in after the round robins to women’s world number 3 Lucy Macgregor.

We are hoping to get some more training in before the Mermaid Match Racing championships on 18-19th April and the first qualifier for the RYA National March racing series the following weekend.
