Last week, I ran a debrief on the recent St Malo race at RORC in London. There are a number of these race debriefs each year, the idea being to get people together and share ideas about what was successful for a particular race and (hopefully) for everyone to improve their performance going forward.

I did the race on ‘John Merricks II’ with a young crew from the British Keelboat Academy. The sailors know the boat inside out and worked incredibly hard during the race to keep the boat going in light and variable conditions. Mike Moxley, owner of the HOD Malice, also spoke giving input on conditions for the smaller boats. Though the details were somewhat different, the overall lessons learnt were very similar.

I have uploaded the presentation we used for the evening and you can view this here. Obviously, this will make most sense to people who were there for the evening, but hopefully others will find it useful as well and hopefully it will encourage more people to come to these events in future.

Strong early season performances from the British Keelboat Academy Development squad sailors in J80s at the RORC Easter Challenge, now into the offshore series on ‘John Merricks II’.

The majority of my time recently has been spent making longer term plans for the BKA - watch this space for more details on dates for the selections as well as news on the future plans, boats etc.

I’ve recently also finished the first year of my Masters, and was really pleased to get a Distinction for my second module and possibly for the year overall.

Well, it somehow seems to have been over three months since I managed to post any updates here. It has been an incredibly busy winter, however, mainly getting the British Keelboat Academy up and running. I’ve organised training sessions both on and off the water, as well as starting to work out what the future of the whole scheme will look like. All very postive, but plenty to keep my busy! There are more frequent updates on all the BKA activities on the website, Facebook fan page and Twitter.

I’ve got a range of other bits going on as well, including discussions about the possibility of having some involvement with a youth Volvo Ocean Race team, and also continuing my Masters study. This weekend, I’m putting the fact that I am officially a part time student to good use and competing in the university yachting championships!

Last weekend, I ran a selection weekend for the newly-formed British Keelboat Academy. Twenty eight sailors - from over 100 applicants - were invited to UKSA and put through their paces in a range of areas. This included sailing in UKSA’s fleet of keelboats on Saturday, a night orienteering exercise on a wet and windy Saturday night and a number of team working exercises on Sunday. The last of these really allowed us to see the candidates in a completely different environment, operating as different members of a team. At the end of the weekend, twenty sailors were selected to join the BKA and all were given individual feedback on areas to work on to develop their sailing careers.

The first event for all the successful sailors will be this coming weekend, with a personal and team development session along with existing members of the BKA. Much of this will berun by Ruari Chisholm of the company High Performance Development, who will provide much of the backgroud, while I will put this into practice in designing the programme for next season.

Members of the BKA will sail UKSA’s fleet of J80s as well as the TP52 ‘John Merricks II’.

I am delighted to be able to announce the launch of the British Keelboat Academy. This is an exciting new partnership between the RYA and UKSA, and is a merger between the two existing programmes which I have run for the past few years - the RYA Keelboat Progrmme and UKSA Yacht Racing Acedemy. Some areas will continue to run in a similar way to before - for example, ‘John Merricks II’ - but the new project should also allow us to offer a better training and racing opportunities for young sailors and also a great package to offer to potential sponsors. I am really excited to be involved with this venture.

Full details can be found on the website, including details of how to apply to attend the selections: www.britishkeelboatacademy.org

It was really interesting to observe another coach in action, as this is not something you get to do very often. Harvey was also really helpful in discussing a number of the tools he uses for goal setting, sailor profiling and performance tracking, and these are all things I will be bringing to my work in future.

Just back from the Match Racing Nationals, run by the RYA and held at Queen Mary Sailing Club in London. I was doing mainsheet for Ian Dobson, with the rest of the crew consisting of Georgie Blaver-Mann (jib), Becky Sands (pit) and Sam Brearey (bow). Having never all sailed together and this being Ian’s second ever match racing event - the first being the Qualifier he won back in the Spring - we knew we were going to be up against it in a strong field including a pair of two-time previous winners in Nick Cherry and Mark Campbell-James.

After a slow start on Friday, we won won three races in a row to leave ourselves well placed in tied fifth place half way through the round robin. On Saturday we had a disastrous day results-wise losing all our matches, despite leading in all but one of them. We had a number of close matches and, ultimately, our lack of time sailing together probably cost us in a couple of situations.

We scraped into the quarter finals starting this morning, drawn against Mark Campbell-James, who has previously been ranked as high as 15 in the world. We therefore knew we were up against it but went into things knowing that if we eliminated some small mistakes we would have a good chance of winning. After a strong pre-start in race one, we let Mark off the hook and started even, but were unable to cross from the left, and we lost by around 20 seconds. In race 2, we again did well pre-start including putting a penalty on the opposition, although we started slightly behind. We tried to keep things close around the course but Mark was just able to complete his penalty on the line to win by around 10 seconds. Mark went on to win the event overall. Mark and I have known each other for several years having sailed together in 2001-2003 on ‘Bear of Britain’, so it was nice to see him still being competitive at this level.

I’ve been busy with the young sailors from both Chernikeeff2 and John Merricks II this weekend beginning the packup of both boats for the winter. Jobs include completely emptying the boats and storing the equipment for the winter, checking and rolling sails and removing the mast for safe storage and checking over the winter. Both crews have had hugely successful seasons - including finishing 11th and 12th overall out of 300 boats in the Rolex Fastnet race - which bodes well for the future, both of these youth campaigns and future top level British sailing. During the winter, sailors from both boats will be undertaking work on the boats in preparation for the 2010 season and also participating in a range of shorebased training sessions to improve their knowledge and skills.
